Pemba Island doesn’t belong to Kenya, says Membe

The government has rubbished claims that have been circulating in some media houses in neighbouring Kenya claiming that Pemba Island in Zanzibar belongs to that country.

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Bernard Membe told the National Assembly here yesterday that Tanzania had not received any formal communication from the government of Kenya regarding the misleading claims.
He reiterated that the islet, which together with Ungunja Island makes Zanzibar, is part of the United Republic of Tanzania.
“Despite the claims that have been going round in some media outlets, Tanzania has not received any formal communication from Kenya regarding the matter,” Minister Member told members of the august House.
He went on to explain that the government of Tanzania was well prepared to clarify on the issue if it gets official communication from the Kenyan government, a member state of the East African Community (EAC), like Tanzania.
